Google Workspace, earlier known as Gsuite is now rolling out interesting features making it more easier and faster to work with Microsoft Office files directly from Gmail without saving it to your Google Drive. The latest updates were recently announced on Google’s blog post.

Google previously offered the functionality to edit and modify Microsoft Office files directly on Google Drive, but now with this new update, the users can edit the documents directly from Gmail without having saved them to Google Drive.

With this new feature, users can edit the documents just by clicking on it, similar to what you would have done in a Google Doc, the benefit being that it would keep the document in the native format.

Google will also add new options to reply to an email such as ‘Reply with this file’ and ‘Open original document’ in Gmail. This update will be available to Google Workspace Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, The G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education, and non-profit customers.

Google is also working on a function adding better orientation and image support to Google Doc allowing documents with both horizontal and vertical orientation and image watermarks. The updates will be rolled out one after another with a wider rollout from January 5, 2021.

The feature will have only for the users with individual accounts and other users with Google Workspace, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, G Suite Basic, Business, Education, and Enterprise for Education plans.
